Economy & Employment

Our vision for North Somerset in 2025 is:

  • To have a competitive local economy providing good quality employment in modern businesses
  • To provide increasing employment in innovative small and medium sized enterprises
  • To invest in and support the creation of jobs in knowledge-based industries with collaboration between the public and business sectors
  • To establish new businesses in less prosperous areas of the district and support social enterprises to meet community needs
  • To reduce the gap between those on very low income and the rest of the population of North Somerset
  • For Weston to be a growing urban centre with a sustainable balance of housing and employment, a rejuvenated seafront and town centre and a family friendly night-time economy
  • To have a high proportion of goods and services provided and purchased locally, especially in the food and drink industries
  • To have impoved local provision of further and higher education to provide a skilled local workforce contributing to our knowledge-driven economy

Our priority objective is to:

  • Improve the economic sustainability of North Somerset, providing more local employment opportunities that match local people's skills, particularly in Weston.

Our progress:

An umbrella Forum has been established to implement this theme and the actions outlined in the Community Strategy are completed or well underway.

In addition the Forum has supported the development of the Economy and Enterprise block of the Local Area Agreement.
