Environment
Our vision for North Somerset in 2025 is:
To have an environment as diverse and at least of the quality that we enjoy today. We will:
- Significantly reduce waste by consuming fewer resources as well as re-using and recycling as much as possible
- Reduce air pollution, particularly through reducing use of and emissions from cars
- Ensure that more people are able to walk or cycle to their destinations
- Increase biodiversity and ensure a rich, sustainable natural environment
- Reduce the environmental impact of existing and new buildings
- Support increased access to ICT to support home and local working
Our objectives are to:
- Maintain and protect the quality of our built and natural environment and encourage education in more environmentally friendly living
- Develop and promote easy access to the countryside of North Somerset
- Take action against environmental crime eg prosecute polluters
Our progress:
- An umbrella partnership to promote and implement action has been established
- Phe Partnership is working towards reducing CO2 emissions by 2.5% by 2010
- Legal action against environmental crime such as fly-tipping and water pollution has increased
In addition the following actions have been started:
- The Partnership supported the development of the LAA by highlighting cross cutting environmental indicators and actions
- A Climate Change Partnership is being established
- The Partnership is working closely with the Energy Savings Trust and National Energy Action initiatives to address climate change issues and social exclusion issues arising from increasing energy costs
